Youth Radio Camp (YRC) Workshop Facilitator

Dates: June 6 – August 26, 2010 (12 weeks)

Radio CKUT, in partnership with McGill Conservatory Daycamps, is
offering a unique opportunity for youth between the ages of 10 -17 to
learn the ins-and-outs of radio broadcasting at our Youth Radio
Camp. Over a week long session campers will write, produce and act
in a radio play, will conduct interviews and create short
documentaries, learn to dj, and at the end of the week will produce
and host a live radio show on CKUT! All sessions will be conducted in
French and English.
Radio CKUT is seeking a camp facilitator to work with our youth
campers over the summer.
This is a great opportunity for students with a background in
communication studies, sound production, journalism, education or
related fields or with a practical background in campus/community
radio to practice and share their skills while working in a fully
bilingual environment.
Job Description
Participate in CKUT orientations, equipment and production trainings
(weeks 1 , 2, & 3)
Produce segments for CKUT’s daily news shows Off the Hour and The
Morning After and host one edition of Off the Hour per week with the
Community New Coordinator (weeks 1, 2 & 3)
Provide equipment and production trainings to new CKUT volunteers
(weeks 2 & 3)
With the YRC Coordinator prepare technical trainings on portable
recording devices, audio editing software, operating the on-air
broadcasting studio and the production studio for CKUT’s YRC (weeks
1, 2 & 3)
With the YRC Coordinator prepare workshops focusing on the history of
radio, on interviewing, producing reports and documentaries for the
radio, producing and hosting a radio show, and creative and artistic
sound production for CKUT’s YRC (weeks 1, 2 & 3)
Facilitate the above workshops for the YRC (weeks 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11)
Act as the executive producer and provide technical support for the
weekly live YRC broadcasts (end of weeks 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11)
Provide radio training, and technical and creative support to youth
from 10 to 17 years old
Maintain weekly reports of activities and keep archives for each
session of camp (throughout)
Prepare a final report outlining successes and difficulties of KRC
and provide recommendations for future camps
Create an “Audio Scrapbook” for each session of campers (week 12)
Requirements/Abilities
English and French spoken
Age 18 years or older
Experience in radio and/or sound production
Knowledge of multitrack editing software (specifically adobe audition
and audacity)
Knowledge of audio recording techniques and parameters
High Energy
Experience in day camps and/or in teaching to teenagers is an asset
Good conflict management and judgement in decision making
Approaches unforeseen situations in a good-humoured way and manages
stress well
Good communication skills and outgoing personality; works well in groups
Students majoring in sound art and production, communications, or
journalism are encouraged to apply as well as those with practical
experience in sound production or broadcast journalism
Selected applicants will be required to obtain a first aid certificate

Languages:
be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status
in Canada;
be legally entitled to work in Canada;
be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
meet the eligibility criteria of the program for which you are applying;
are registered in the YCW on-line candidate inventory; register

are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
do not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while
employed with YCW;
have been a full-time student (as defined by your educational
institution) in the semester preceding the YCW job;
intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the
YCW job.
have a working knowledge of both English and French;
are willing to work in another region of Canada (your primary
residence must be at least 125 km from Montreal).
Have a permanent residence 125 km away from Montreal (students living
in Montreal may qualify for this criterium)
Additional Information
· The Young Canada Works in Both Official Languages will cover
the costs of transportation to and from the chosen candidate’s
residence to Montreal
Required Availability
Monday – Friday 8am – 4pm
*Special Training (paid):
Friday evenings: June 10 & 17, 5-9pm
Sat. & Sundays: June 11, 12, 18, 19, 9am – 5pm; June 25, 9am-noon
Dates: June 6 – August 26, 2010 (12 weeks)
Hour/week: 40
Hourly Wage: $11.00
