Hello COMS students,
After two weeks of awesome Prodfest events, we figured we’d throw one last party to celebrate all of our hardwork and successes this year.
Come by VINYL LOUNGE on Saturday, April 30th, to party with the Guild before the start of summer vacation! The party is NAUTICAL themed, so feel free to dress up like a sailor/mermaid/fish or whatever you think is appropriate, or come as you are!
There will be 2 FREE DRINK tickets PER PERSON until they run out!
Afterwards, enjoy some cheap drinks while listening to DJS Phil Creamer! The tip is included in the drink tickets, so its up to your discretion if you would like to tip more!

The purpose of the General Rehearshal this Sunday is to showcase all of their hard work and awesome skills. And to show the rest of our department, friends, and family exactly what the COMS Games is! The rehearsal will feature 13 different events, in a game simulation.
These are:

- Advertising and Strategy
- Event Planning
- Graphic Communication

- Journalistic Interview
- Improvisation

Dear fellow Concordia students,
You may have seen the word WHALE around campus on posters, handbills, and Facebook. What is it about? It’s the Wintry Hot Accessible Love-in for Education! On February 14th, undergraduate and graduate students will both hold General Assemblies and then get together to celebrate at an awesome Valentine’s winter fair. There will be lunch, activities and heaters on the Hall building Terrace outside Reggies. So that’s:
CSU Special General Meeting:
February 14th, 11:30am
Hall building Terrace
GSA General Assembly:
February 14th, 11:00am
Java U, Hall Building
lunch and activities on the Hall Terrace following
Why should you come? The Quebec government has stated its intention to increase tuition fees substantially over the next four years both for Quebec residents and International students. While the exact increase is still being decided by politicians and Quebec University Presidents, one of the increases most often discussed is from the current roughly $2000 per year to $5000 per year, finally destroying the Quebec dream of accessible higher education for all.
Special General Meetings/General Assemblies are the highest level of government for students – with the required quorum, they are more powerful than either the council or executive. They involve voting on motions which if passed, become legally binding on the CSU and GSA. This means that your individual vote goes to directly affecting the policies of your union and your school. Currently the quorum for a CSU Special General Meeting is over 800 people, which is why one has not been held in years – there is no room big enough on campus to hold this many people. We don’t need to let this stop us anymore, but we need your help! With or without quorum, this will be a historic event at Concordia.
We have seen that Concordia is governed primarily by a small group of corporate executives who do not know or care what is best for students. In fact, they have supported tuition increases and appointed Presidents who support huge tuition increases. Despite votes of non-confidence from almost every student, faculty and staff union on campus, the Chair of the Board Peter Kruyt refuses to leave, as do the 13 community-at-large Board members who have overstayed their term limits and their welcome. We need to send a message that the will of students should be enforced.
The Concordia Students’ Union, Graduate Students’ Association of Concordia, Free Education Montreal, Peoples’ Campus Coalition, People’s Potato, Arts and Science Federation of Associations, and Political Science Student Association support this event, and the organizing committee, which has grown to almost 50 people, continues to contact more associations.
The assemblies will be short and sweet, with only a few motions including:
BE IT RESOLVED “That the CSU call for a Day of Action to denounce the Ministry of Education’s proposed tuition fee hikes, in solidarity with Quebec students and all those with a stake in accessible education. This Day of Action will be in effect immediately upon adjournment of the Special General Meeting, lasting for the entire day”.
AND a motion to reduce quorum for CSU Special General Meetings from 2.5 to 1.5 percent of members to make future meetings easier (and indoors).
All over the world and all over Quebec, people power is working! Be part of people power at Concordia…This Valentine’s Day, make a date with your union!

Hello COMS students,
Starting Thursday, February 3rd, the COMS Guild will begin to sell this year’s official Communication Studies sweaters. We took an old concept, and revitalized it: the sweaters are black zip-up Gildan hoodies (super warm and comfy ones at that!), with Communication Studies written on the front, and TRUST THE MEDIA written on the back. They cost 30 dollars (tax included). You can order SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE or X-L!
Check them out on our poster, or come by and see them in person Tuesday and Thursday’s at lunch time in the Atrium, between 12 pm and 1 pm, or you can e-mail us at cg.concordia@gmail.com
We will be accepting orders until February 18th.
See you soon,
Your COMS Guild

We are messaging you to let you know about many fun events happening around Concordia this month, including the ASFA MA Fair, the ASFA Academic Series, and also an opportunity to work for La Société de la Place des Arts.
First,
ASFA is holding an MA Fair this Thursday, January 20th. This event is a chance for students to learn about the activities of the different student associations, and to to speak to their representatives face-to-face. We, the COMS Guild, will be having our own booth in the SP Building on Thursday between 11 am and 4 pm, so come by, say hi, and see how you can get involved!
http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=141865435871361&index=1
Next,
ASFA will be hosting its very first Academic Series, consisting of two panel discussions featuring speakers such as alumni professionals from different fields in Social Sciences, Humanities and Science as well as current students and Concordia’s Counseling and Development.
The panels will take place in the Hall Building, H-767. The Social Science and Humanities panel is Tuesday, January
25, 2011 from 4:00-6:00 p.m, and the Science panel will be on Thursday, January 27, 2011 from 4:00-6:00p.m.
This Series is intended to give a balanced perspective on career planning, by combining a variety of speakers from all stages in their studies and/or careers. The Panels are also a good chance to raise awareness among students about the importance of early career planning, and it provides them with basic resources, information, and tools to help them (YOU!) prepare.
